About Us

Homebrewers Mercantile, or “The Merc,” was founded by longtime friends Mark and Jose, who share a passion for brewing great beer. Their friendship, built over decades of common interests, led them to create a business focused on supporting the homebrewing community. Recognizing the impact they could have through the supply chain, they turned their attention to homebrewing supplies.

The Merc is more than an online store—it’s a passion project. With plans for a future brick-and-mortar space, Mark and Jose aim to brew small batches and share their knowledge with fellow homebrewers.

Meet the Founders

Mark Zanfardino began homebrewing in 1994 after receiving a kit as a birthday gift. His curiosity about different beer styles quickly evolved into a passion for brewing IPAs, Belgian Strong Ales, Stouts, and Blondes. A software engineer with 35+ years of experience, Mark applies his technical expertise to brewing, integrating smart tools for precision and consistency. He is an active member of QUAFF, San Diego’s largest homebrew club, and continually experiments with new styles and techniques.

Jose Dias is a dedicated homebrewer and an active figure in San Diego’s craft beer scene. With a background in Biology and Psychology, he pivoted to IT and has spent nearly 30 years as a consultant, software developer, and virtual CIO. He began brewing in 2012 and quickly progressed to all-grain brewing, refining his techniques through multiple homebrew system iterations. A certified beer judge (BJCP) and QUAFF member, Jose brings a scientific approach to recipe development.

Together, Mark and Jose brew a variety of styles, consistently crafting award-winning recipes. Their beers—ranging from IPAs and Imperial Stouts to Belgian Golden Strongs and Blondes—have advanced to the finals of the National Homebrew Competition. In 2022, they won Gold at QUAFF’s America’s Finest City competition for their coffee-infused Imperial Stout, leading to a collaboration with Mission Brewing. They returned in 2024 to brew a IIIPA, an unforgettable experience.

Kelley Zanfardino brings 35+ years of HR expertise to The Merc. As the owner of Sage HR, she helps businesses align strategic goals with effective people management. An MBA graduate and certified Senior HR Professional, Kelley has been published in Strategic Finance, Association Leadership, and PEO Insider. Her expertise ensures The Merc is built on a strong foundation.
